Best One, Worst One - Day 8 Round-Up

Well, that was a day and a half!

GER vs SRBWe began at lunchtime with Germany vs. Serbia, and that was some game... We began with what looked like a very strong German team, and quite a weak Serbian team. The Serbians were naturally defensive, and Germans attacking (no WWII accusations intended...), and that looked to be how it would go. But it was completely different, and Milan Jovanovic put the ball in the German net in the 33rd minute. Miroslav Klose then got himself a second yellow for a stupid tackle, and Germany had to finish the game with 10 men. Plenty of woodwork hitting then went on, and when Nemanja Vidic conceded a penalty, things looked to become equal again. Lukas Podolski then missed the penalty, and the game finished as we were, at 1-0. If you want to see the highlights, click here.

SVN vs USAThe next game was Slovenia vs. USA, and it just got better. Best game of the tournament so far. Slovenia took the lead in the 13th minute with an absolute belter from Valter Birsa, and then Zlatan Ljubijankic made it 2-0. Half time obviously went well for the USA, and Landon Donovan pulled one back through rocketing the ball into the roof of the net, and then, with 10 minutes to go, Michael Bradley, scores the decisive goal. Maurice Edu then had a goal disallowed, wrongly, and they were rightfully annoyed. Still, the ref was a bit trigger happy with his cards, and a couple of the players will miss the next game. If you want the highlights, they are found here.

ENG vs ALGOur final game today was England vs. Algeria. By a living mile, the worst game I've seen of the tournament. England just lacked absolutely everything - no attacking power, no decent tackles, nothing. It was just so so poor. David James hardly had to make a save, so it wasn't like Algeria were all over us, but there was no-one to take charge - Gerrard was abysmal, and even Rooney was poor. Waz summed it up with this - 'Nice to see your home fans booing you'. It leaves every team in Group C on 2 points, so everything is to play for next Wednesday. If you want to watch what very few highlights there were, click here.

Never Mind Favourites....

The favourites to win the World Cup before we kicked off were Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Germany and England. Only two of the teams have actually shown they could win the thing, but even thern, there are flaws right across their team.

Spain lost to Switzerland. England drew with USA. Germany even lost today to Serbia. It throws the groups completely open, and could lead to some shock exits come the second round.

Brazil looked a brilliant team, but against Korea DPR, couldn't string a set of passes together, and the defence looked quite weak. They didn't seem to be playing the beautiful football we're used to.

Even Argentina looked incredibly dangerous to back. Yes, they have three of the best forwards in the world, and yes, they will score bags and bags of goals, but their chink in their armour is the defence - gaps appear everywhere and things could go bad for them.

So who do I back?

Just wait and find out.....

We Should Be So Lucky... - Day 7 Round-Up

And after a week of games - 20, to be precise, we arrive at today. And what a mix we had. We got as we wished!

ARG vs KORArgentina vs. South Korea was to kick us off today, and what a stunning game. The two teams I reckon will go through, head to head. With the likes of Messi, Aguero and Higuain up front from the start, we were in for a good game. A Messi free kick led to the own goal to put Argentina 1-0 up, and it was like Park Chu-Young was a statue - he just didn't move, and it hit him. Another Messi cross left Gonzalo Higuain to head in a second, and then a stroke of luck arrive when Lee Chung-Yong pinched the ball and popped it in the back of the net to make it 2-1. Half time obviously led to strong words by Diego Maradona, and they worked wonders. More Messi magic led to a third goal from Higuain, and then he got his hat-trick with one of the best goals of the tournament, involving all three of the strikers. Just magical. So the game finished 4-1, and now Argentina look certain to go through. Watch the highlights here.

GRE vs NIGNext up were Greece vs. Nigeria, and it was dull. Very very dull. We had a quick first half, with a belter of a goal from Kalu Uche, and then a sending off for a petulant kick from Sani Kaita. It was off the ball, and off the pitch, but it was still stupid, and you could tell he was disappointed. The Greeks turned the game around just before the break, with the first ever Greek World Cup goal from Dimitris Salpingidis, and then number two was scored by Vassilis Torosidis in the 70th minute, after a spill from the Nigerian keeper. To watch the highlights, click here.

FRA vs MEXFinally today, we had France vs. Mexico, and it was very, very attacking. It was even, and Mexico looked a very well-oiled machine in the first half. It was split equally during the second half, and was a very exciting, open game. Javier Hernandez scored for Mexico in what looked to be the decisive goal, but it was in fact Cuauhtemoc Blanco who coverted a penalty who won the game for Mexico. 2-0 was a brilliant result, and one that could end France's chances of even qualifying. If you wish to watch the highlights, click here.

What a day though! Next week starts tomorrow - happy days!

Where's The Big Man?

The face of South Africa. The first thing I for one think of when I think of the country. Bar the World Cup at the minute, obviously. But where is Madiba? Where is Nelson Mandela?

Apparently he is too frail to attend the games, and we understand that tragedy struck the family just before the opening ceremony, so it is understandable  that he hasn't arrived at the games yet. But does anyone else get the feeling he may be kept from going public on the pitch until the final?

I have a feeling that he may hand over the trophy. Don't hold me to it, but he looks like he's practised. Check the picture......

And We Start Again... - Day 6 Round-Up

Today was the day we got to see the last of the 32 teams for the first time, and also began the second games. And it was a bit of a shocker.

HON vs CHIThe lunchtime job today was Honduras vs. Chile, and it was quite a straight-forward affair. With 20 shots throughout the game, Chile were the stronger team, but Honduras did have some very dangerous attacks. It was Jean Beausejour's shot that gave Chile their first World Cup win since 1962, and it remained that way till full time. Quite a poor match, but hey, better than some of the stuff we've seen so far. If you want to watch the highlights, click here.

SPA vs. SUINext up was Spain vs. Switzerland, and it was looking to be a big walkover. Oh how wrong we were. Even with 67% of the possession, Spain were the second best, and after Gelson Fernandes 52nd minute goal, Switzerland won 1-0. How? We may not ever know, but it really throws Spain's plan off. The Swiss also caused 18 fouls - with only 4 yellow cards. Weird.... For the highlights, click here.

RSA vs. URULast game of the day was South Africa vs. Uruguay - first game where we've already seen the two teams. Teams looked good from the start, but very evenly matched, so I for one, thought we may very well be in for a draw. Diego Forlan looked to have finished that idea with an absolute thunderbolt in the first half to make it 1-0 Uruguay, and it proved that the uproar over the World Cup ball doesn't always end in mishaps. Second half was a little more open, but with Luis Suarez diving everywhere, things began to swing to Uruguay, and Itumeleng Khune, the South African keeper, was sent off, and Forlan then converted the penalty to make it 2-0. It was in fact the 5th red card of the tournament - and seeing as we've had 17 games, that's quite a few. The game finished with Alvaro Pareira heading in a third, but if you want to watch the highlights, click here.

Just cross everything that we have more games and more goals like what we've had today.

VUVUZELAAAA!

What's that sound?

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

That's right, its the vuvuzela! And yes, most of you hate them, but I really like them. It adds a bit of a different atmosphere to the games. Plus you get used to it when watching the games, so you people who are complaining should just watch it for a bit longer and get used to it.

If you can't beat them, join them. I think the vuvuzela may very well be making an appearance in the Premier League next season.....

Spain - Not World Beaters After All?

Yeah, yeah, I know. Only the first game. But still, they were just lacking something tonight. So are Spain really world beaters, or are they going to live up to their 'underachiever' title?

I never did think Spain were good enough to beat the likes of Argentina or Brazil. They were the best in Europe because of some very fluky decisions, and some lucky wins. So obviously, not the best in the world.

Because if you were the best in the world, surely you'd beat Switzerland? I'm sensing some big shouting at the end of the game.

Lets see who plays the next game against Honduras, and make the decision on that....

Bored Bored Bored - Day 5 Round-Up

I think the title sums up the day - boring. Every. Single. Game.

NZL vs SVKWe began with New Zealand vs. Slovakia, and you could tell why it was made the lunchtime kick-off. It's like asking if you want a Netto own burger, or a piece of New York steak. This was the burger of Group F. It was quite a slow-paced game, with very few shots on target - 3 each, I believe. Robert Vittek gave Slovakia the lead in the 50th minute, and with seconds remaining in stoppage time, Winston Reid popped up to equalise for New Zealand, and earn them their first ever World Cup point. Quite a special moment really. To watch the highlight, click here.

CIV vs POR
Next up was the first game in Group G - Ivory Coast vs. Portugal. It was meant to be one of the highlights of the group stages - emphasis on the 'meant to be'... What a shocker. Absolutely appalling. I watched the game, and actually fell asleep in the 50th minute. It was that dull. The best bit of the game was Ronaldo's flick, cutback and shot that struck the post. That was the lot. Ronny even attempted to get players booked at every opportunity to spruce things up a bit - thanks Ronny, but you're still a knob. For the shortest highlights in WC history (it has to be...), click here.

BRA vs. PKOFinally, we had Brazil vs. North Korea. Now, with Brazil ranked number one in the world, and with the North Koreans ranked 105th, we expected an absolute rout. How far from the truth we were. Brazil couldn't put a chain of passes together in the first half thanks to Korea DPR's zonal marking, which worked brilliantly. It meant they went in at 0-0, but once the break was over, it was game over. Maicon scored a freak cross/goal that beat the keeper at the near post, and Elano finished the game after 72 minutes with a great goal. Ji Yun-Nam scored late on for the North Koreans, but it was too little, too late, and the game finished 2-1. To see the highlights, click here.

We're now all hoping for a better day tomorrow, seeing as most viewers fossilised during the games today...

For The Ladies...

Now, I understand that most of you have become World Cup Widows, and that's why I'm going to try and entice you to watch today's game. Ivory Coast vs. Portugal involves this man... Cristiano Ronaldo. Let's hope he takes his shirt off, then we can all be happy!

Goalie Blunders - Ball or Balls?

We've seen plenty of keeper blunders so far this World Cup. Most of the teams have blamed the ball, but my question is this... Is it the ball, or is that a load of balls?

We've had Robert Green for England. Justo Villar for Paraguay. Faouzi Chaouchi for Algeria. All keepers who have made bad mistakes in regards to the Jabulani, the ball being used.

According to adidas, it has been thoroughly tested, and gone without complaint before the World Cup. Yes, it makes it more exciting, but surely the balls should be fair for all members of the team, rather than all but the keepers?

And also, why would it be the ball's fault? Surely if you're meant to be the best keeper from your country, then you get behind that ball if its the last thing you do.

I'm going with Balls. It's not the ball, its the players.

Channel Conundrum - Who To Watch?!

Over here in the UK, we have a choice of two channels to watch games on - BBC and ITV. Neither share games until the final, but both have an equal share of games to show. And theres quite a bit of uproar over here over who to watch.

Personally, I prefer the ITV coverage, but with the BBC 'special' pundits. And I don't like all the adverts either, but I guess that's what lets us watch the games!

On the BBC, we have Gary Lineker fronting the coverage, with Alan Hansen, Alan Shearer and Lee Dixon - all of whom are Match of the Day pundits normally. They're joined by Gordon Strachan, Jurgen Klinsmann, Clarence Seedorf, Emmanuel Adebayor, Harry Redknapp and Roy Hodgson. Not a bad team for them!

ITV, however, have Adrian Chiles fronting their coverage, and he's brilliant. Is a fan, talks like a fan, and wants to be a fan, rather than a presenter. It just works. He's joined by Andy Townsend, Kevin Keegan, Marcel Desailly, Edgar Davids, Gareth Southgate, and Patrick Vieira. Hardly prolific World Cup players...

So yeah, there's my take on it all. I just wish Chiles had stayed at the BBC, and ITV had targetted Gary Lineker instead.....

Adam Misses All - Day 4 Round-Up

Now school began again today. Couldn't have been a worse day, but we had to go back. And that means I missed all the football. So what you'll be reading below will be exactly what you can watch if you want to, by clicking on the highlight links. Simple, really.

NED vs DENThe first game was the lunchtime kick-off - Netherlands vs. Denmark. What a freaky game! Sat down to watch the highlights, and there were only 3 minutes of them, so I assumed it would be crap, but I was very wrong. Nicklas Bendtner missed some sitters in the first half, and the freakiest own goal this season gave Holland the lead, after Simon Poulsen headed the ball against Daniel Agger's back for it to trickle in. The second goal, late in the second half, was good, as Dirk Kuyt follows up the ball and slides it home. Damian and I discussed the game before kick off, and we disagreed with the choice of playing Kuyt from the start, but we were proved wrong, which is always a good thing! Wesley Sneijder seemed to be everywhere as well, and I think he could be key. Still, 2-0 will set them up well. For the highlights, click here.

JPN vs CAMNext up was Japan vs. Cameroon. Now it was the story of two of the best teams of the tournament - kit wise of course. Cameroon in yellow with red pinstripes, and Japan in blue with white trim. That's about as good as it gets. The odd bit of flair and skill from Cameroon was nice to see, and broke up a dire game between the two. Japan took the lead towards the end of the first half thanks to a defensive error and a brilliant bit of instinct from Keisuke Honda, and then decided the best way to win the game was to put 10 men behind the ball. Everything from then onwards was Cameroon, but it wasn't enough, and the game finished 1-0. To watch the highlights, click here.

ITA vs PARThat finished off Group E, and that meant the last game of the day was the start of Group F - Italy vs. Paraguay. Now normally, this would have 'drubbing' written all over it, but with the selection within the squads, people thought a little differently. Paraguay took a shock lead thanks to a header from a corner by Antolin Alcarez, but this was cancelled out in the second half thanks to a bit of stupid goalkeeping, and Daniele De Rossi slots the ball home. From there, it was all Italy, but their old squad couldn't do anything more, and the game finished 1-1. To see the highlights (I wouldn't bother...), click here.

That was Day 4, and I think this may now be the trend for the next few days......

Tale of Two Halves - Day 3 Round-Up

And it really was. We went from one extreme to another in just a few hours. And it was well worth the wait.

ALG vs. SVNFirst up today was Algeria vs. Slovenia, to finish off the first round of games in Group B. It was like watching paint dry. The game was boring, slow and repetitive, and it looked like no-one would score until Robert Koren popped up with little over 10 minutes to go. Dull. Dull. Dull. If you really, really want to waste 5 minutes of your life, and watch just how dull this game was, then click here.

SRB vs. GHAThen we had Serbia vs. Ghana to launch Group C, and that was just like a party. Having an African nation actually play well, unlike Algeria earlier, made the whole continent go mad. And that was before the goal. Asamoah Gyan converted a penalty with 5 minutes to go to give Ghana an opening game win, and they now set themselves up for a big tournament. To watch highlights of this one, and I advise you at least watch the brilliant goal, click here.

GER vs. AUSAnd the final game of Day 3 was that between Germany and Australia, and what an absolutely stunning game. The first half was the best half of football I've watched in the last year. Ozil is the best player seen so far, and with Australia playing very poorly, they conceded two very classy goals. Second half was a little more open, and with a correct piece of refereeing, sending Tim Cahill off killed the game with it. The third goal was a one-man effort, and then Cacau slotted one in with 20 minutes to go. It just seamed effortless for them to walk this game. With the game finishing 4-0, Germany now look like the team to beat. To watch the highlights, and please do, because it was just brilliant, click here.

And today was the first time ever that every game of the day involved a red card. Weird how things like that go, int it? Let's hope that's the lot for now though.

One To Watch - Mesut Ozil

I've just sat and watched the first half of the Germany vs. Australia game, and watched in awe at the passing maestro in midfield. And guess who said he was one to watch?! (you can even check!)

Mesut Ozil has just ripped the Australians apart. His passing has been precise and perfect; his skill has shown why he is one of the most talented kids in the tournament; his finesse just makes everyone sit back and watch him come to life.

He's led every attack for Germany, and is behind every move for his nation. I'm just hoping that the rumours of Fergie looking into signing him from Werder Bremen for Man United this summer are true, because in a couple of years, he is gonna be even better than he currently is, and thats a scary proposition.

Outstanding Attacking - Day 2 Round-Up

Having now watched 5 out of the 64 games, we're beginning to get a bit of a feel for how its all going. And how attacking was today?!

KOR vs GREFirst game of today was the Korea Republic against Greece, and it was a brilliant display by the Asian team. They showed that they really have recovered the form of the 2002 semi-finalists, and it was actually a very enjoyable game to watch - makes a change when it involves Greece. Highlights are found here.

ARG vs NIGNext up on the roster was Argentina vs. Nigeria, and it was the best game so far. First half was absolutely stunning - haven't seen a game of football like that in a while. Messi's jinking runs and Tevez's brute force matched perfectly, and the lack of defence for both teams were only uncovered fully in the last 10 minutes. The passing was brilliant too, and it bodes well for the next month. You can watch the highlights here.

ENG vs USAFinally, we had England vs. USA. What a really poor game. When Gerrard put the ball in the net within 10 minutes, I thought we were on our way. But no, however we did it, we let the USA come back, and eventually ended up drawing 1-1, thanks to an absolute blunder from Robert Green. If I were Capello, I'd have pulled him off at half time, and let him know it wasn't acceptable. Second half was a little better, but we brought on slower players and brought the pace of the game right down, making Wayne Rooney a very unhappy bunny. Still, if you want to watch the highlights, click here.
